I would like to take this time to remember those men and women who have died in military service for our country. Also, keep in our prayers those that are currently serving.
Memorial Day (originally called Decoration Day) was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic. It was first observed on 30 May 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate solders at Arlington National Cemetery. The first state to officially recognize the holiday was New York in 1873.
Here are 3 suggestions how to observe Memorial Day
- Visit cemeteries and placing flags or flowers on the graves of our fallen heroes
- Visit memorials
- Flying the United States flag at half-staff until noon
